Roustan Hockey, manufacturer of Christian hockey sticks and McKenney goalie equipment, has donated 1,000 hockey sticks and two sets of goalie gear to Scarborough-based Hockey Equality, a grassroots non-profit organization that fosters diversity and inclusion within the sport.
“Roustan Hockey’s mission is to grow the game of hockey by making hockey more affordable so that hockey is truly for everyone,” said W. Graeme Roustan, chairman and owner of Roustan Hockey.
“And with this donation and support of Hockey Equality, another step in the right direction is made.”
“We are extremely grateful to Roustan Hockey for their donation as well as the example they set for others to support growing the game,” said Hockey Equality chairman Anthony Stewart.
Diversity is important at all levels of hockey, including the National Hockey League.
Kim Davis, the NHL’s senior executive vice-president of Social Impact, Growth Initiatives and Legislative Affairs, said the organization is often asked about diversity within the professional ranks and how progress is made.
“The truth is, of course, that with exposure, resources and equity of opportunity, young athletes-of-colour will learn, grow and realize their potential as people and as hockey players,” Davis said.
The collaboration with Roustan Hockey is further proof that “industry partners are seeking a hockey-wide movement toward greater access and inclusion.”
